Ranking Titles

Sample conversation about improving an academic-style title

guest657747: mark
markfullmer@digsby.org: hello!
guest657747: does this sound ACademic
guest657747: "Settling: A Modern Day Woman's Dilema"?
markfullmer@digsby.org: (two m's in dilemma)
guest657747: ugh
guest657747: haha
markfullmer@digsby.org: It's starting to sound academic, but it could be better.
markfullmer@digsby.org: let's see...
guest657747: ok well is it good, I'm having trouble with a title for this one
markfullmer@digsby.org: remember: an academic style title has 3 parts.
guest657747: ok
guest657747: hmm
guest657747: so I need two parts, the first one a hook and the second what its going to be talking about?
markfullmer@digsby.org: part A I think you've got: "A Modern Day Woman's Dilemma"
markfullmer@digsby.org: Exactly
guest657747: btw
guest657747: this is andreas if you havn't figured it out by now
markfullmer@digsby.org: The second part should be something that talks about analyzing the meaning of settling as related to marriage in the 21st century
guest657747: hmm
markfullmer@digsby.org: with a specific emphasis on changing gender roles for females
markfullmer@digsby.org: does that make sense?
markfullmer@digsby.org: btw, hey Andreas!
guest657747: um, ya
markfullmer@digsby.org: great.
guest657747: So if I said "A Modern Day Woman's Dilemma: Settling in the Twenty First Century"?
markfullmer@digsby.org: Getting there
guest657747: It sounds academic to me but I'm never sure jaja
markfullmer@digsby.org: haha
guest657747: idk what to do!
markfullmer@digsby.org: could you sneak in somehting about changing gender roles & marriage?
markfullmer@digsby.org: (and you don't need to spell out 21st)
guest657747: what do you mean by changing gender roles
markfullmer@digsby.org: well, settling means something different now than it used to because women's role in society is different now.
guest657747: oh I see
guest657747: so Ineed to be more specific
guest657747: ok
markfullmer@digsby.org: oftentimes, academic titles use simple listing
guest657747: "A Modern Day Woman's Dilema: Settling and Marriage in the 21st Century"
guest657747: BAMM!
markfullmer@digsby.org: so you might say something like:
markfullmer@digsby.org: Getting really close Andreas!
guest657747: ugh!
markfullmer@digsby.org: Can I make a slight suggestion?
guest657747: always
markfullmer@digsby.org: "A Modern Day Woman's Dilemma: Marriage, Gender Roles, and the Meaning of Settling in the 21st Century"
guest657747: That sounds Academic to me
markfullmer@digsby.org: good good good!
guest657747: why cant Academic Writing come naturally to me
guest657747: ahha
markfullmer@digsby.org: heheh
markfullmer@digsby.org: spend 2 years in grad school and it'll be easy.
guest657747: well actually
guest657747: I plan to go to art school
guest657747: instead
markfullmer@digsby.org: can I quote this discussion on the website for others working on their titles
guest657747: ya
guest657747: sure
markfullmer@digsby.org: thx

______________________________________________________________________________

2 Annotated Bibliographies ( 10% of final grade, each 5% )

Topic: The sources for these assignment are the sources that will be used for the GRP and IRP

Type of Assignment: An annotated bibliography is used before writing the research paper. You should take time to comprehend their sources, and to consider its relevancy and reliability before deciding whether it is a useful, reliable source. An annotated bibliography also may lessen instances of plagiarism in the final draft of the research paper, since you have to fully understand the content of the source in order to write the annotation.

Task: You should write an annotation of 200-300 words for each source for GRP and IRP. The annotation for each source should  have the following 4 components: (1) Full citation of sources listed in APA, followed by (2) a brief summary (4-5 sentences), (3) an explanation of its relevancy to the research topic/question (4-5 sentences), and (4) an evaluation of its reliability (2-3 sentences).

Formatting: Times New Roman, Size 12, Double-spaced, APA Reference page citations; the research topic or question should be included as the title of the document.

Sources: The three sources for the GRP are chosen and limited by a whole class.
The five sources for the IRP are chosen by the student.

Plagiarism: The skill of summarizing should be emphasized in this assignment. No quoting should be used in the annotated bibliographies. Plagiarism should be easily identifiable!

Deadlines: TBA.
The annotated bibliography should be submitted before you begin writing the final drafts of the research papers, in order to identify problems in comprehension, plagiarism, or source reliability.

Day33 : Peer Perception GRP

Objectives: We will be able to ..........

  1. give relevant feedback to the writer.
  2. review the feedback and check your own essay.
  3. edit your own essay to improve your GRP.

IRP Individual Conference Scheduling Document

Peer Perception Form

During Peer Review or Perception:
Remember, you aren't there to 'judge' their essay.
You are the receiver.
Read the paper and try to understand it.
When you notice something that hinders your understanding,
try to diagnose the difference between their intention and your perception.
In this way, it's not about what is wrong with the paper; it's about the effectiveness of delivery.

How to be an effective reviewer:
Don't answer questions with 'yes' or 'no'. EXPLAIN.
Be positive, but be honest.
Look for weaknesses AND strengths.

Editing your own work:
Sometimes it's difficult to review your own work
because you've spent too much time looking at it.
Go through the peer review comments carefully!
Don't dismiss them right away if you don't agree.
Think about WHY the reader felt the way that they did.
Look also at your strengths and think about how you can continue to perform well on future essays.

Finally, use this editing checklist to help you check your own essay.
When you are checking for sentence-level issues,
read your paper backwards, one sentence at a time.

Day32 : GRP Rubric

Guided Research Paper (20% of final grade)

Structure: This research paper should be written using a Problem-Solution structure.

Length: Final papers should only be 2-3 pages. Because you are only using 3 sources, it is unrealistic that you will be able to write an entire research paper. For this assignment you will only need to write an introduction, 1 Solution (description, critique & improvement), and a conclusion. The rest of the paper is hypothetical, but you should discuss other potential solutions and include them in your thesis statement.

Outline:
(This also applies to IRP)

I.   Introduce the problem & organization

II.    Solution #1:
a. Description
b. Critique

III.  Solution #2:
